Health, Safety and Environmental Considerations
For Learners on Installation or Maintenance Pathways
Aim
This unit is designed to enable learners to develop the skills and apply the relevant knowledge associated with Health and Safety legislation, practices and procedures when installing and maintaining electrical systems and equipment.
Learning Outcomes
This unit is comprised of the following FOUR Learning Outcomes – full details below.
LO1 – Be able to apply relevant Health and Safety legislation in the workplace
LO2 – Be able to assess the work environment for hazards and identify remedial actions in
accordance with Health and Safety legislation
LO3 – Be able to apply methods and procedures to ensure work on site is in accordance with
Health and Safety legislation
LO4 – Be able to work in accordance with environmental legislation for electrical services
Evidence Requirements
For ALL Learning Outcomes 1-4
You must provide auditable evidence sourced from a real working environment to illustrate that you can apply Health and Safety legislation and working practices when Installing and Maintaining Electrical Systems and Equipment in accordance with approved industry practices, statutory and non-statutory regulations and the assessment criteria for each of the learning outcomes.
You will be observed in the workplace by a qualified assessor on at least two separate occasions, at least one of which must be a physical, face-to-face assessment. Reflective accounts will not be accepted as evidence for this unit. Any outstanding performance criteria that are not met through the direct observations must be supplemented by alternate evidence provided by the employer.
You personally should be in as many photos/videos as possible.

What is Assessment Criteria?
This is the criteria you are being assessed against. In order to successfully complete the assessment, you must meet the criteria in EVERY unit.
How do I meet the Assessment Criteria of every unit?
You will simply provide evidence (photos) of HOW you carried out your duties.
This unit is about you working safely whilst carrying out your electrical installation or maintenance duties. You must provide evidence that you have carried out a risk assessment BEFORE you started work, review your working area DURING your working day, and tidied up upon completion of the job. You need to demonstrate that you have used access equipment safely and are dressed in the appropriate PPE.

Learning Outcome 1
Be able to apply relevant Health and Safety legislation in the workplace
Assessment criteria
- Identify which workplace Health and Safety procedures are relevant to the working environment and comply with their duties and obligations as defined by current legislation and organisational procedures
- Produce a risk assessment and method statement in accordance with organisational procedures for a given work activity
- Work within the requirements of:
- risk assessments
- method statements
- safe systems of work

Learning Outcome 2
Be able to assess the work environment for hazards and identify remedial actions in accordance with Health and Safety legislation
Assessment criteria
- Identify unsafe situations and conditions and take remedial actions
- Assess the work environment and revise work practices accordingly to take into account hazards which could cause harm, including the handling of potentially hazardous:
- materials
- tools
- equipment
- Identify any hazards which may present a high risk and report their presence to relevant persons who have overall responsibility for Health and Safety in the workplace
- Apply measures to control Health and Safety hazards
- Select and use correct personal protective equipment.

Identify unsafe situations and actions taken to clear this.
Identify hazards relevant to Materials, Tools and equipment.
Identify high-risk hazards such as electric shock.
Control measures for Health and Safety.
Use of PPE.
Learning Outcome 3
Be able to apply methods and procedures to ensure work on site is in accordance with Health and Safety legislation
Assessment criteria
- Ensure that the Health and Safety of themselves and others is not endangered through personal conduct and behaviour within the workplace
- Apply procedures to ensure the safe use, maintenance and storage of tools, plant and equipment as stipulated in:
- workplace policies (company & site)
- supplier information
- manufacturer’s instructions.
- Comply with information, warning, mandatory instruction and prohibition notices
- Apply procedures to ensure the safety of the work location through the correct use of guards, barriers and notices
- Use access equipment correctly.

Personal conduct on-site to ensure safety.
Procedures to ensure the safe use, maintenance and storage of tools and plan (Workplace policies and Manufacturers info).

Barriers and notices.
Access equipment – 2 of the following – Scaffold, Step ladders, platform, or ladder.
Learning Outcome 4
Be able to work in accordance with environmental legislation for electrical services
Assessment criteria
- Use appropriate procedures for the safe handling, storage and disposal of hazardous materials and products, in accordance with the:
- Environmental Protection Act
- The Hazardous Waste Regulations
- Pollution Prevention and Control Act
- Control of Pollution Act
- The Control of Noise at Work Regulations
- Environment Act.
