UNIT 110
For The 2346-03 EWA
Apply Practices and Procedures for Maintenance
For Learners on the Maintenance Pathway Only
Aim
This unit is designed to enable the learner to develop the skills required, and apply the associated knowledge, in order that they are able to demonstrate the competence required to maintain electrical systems and equipment in accordance with approved industry practices, statutory and non-statutory regulations:
- The Electricity at Work Regulations
- The current edition of BS 7671
- Health & Safety at Work Act
- Building Regulations
Learning Outcomes
This unit is comprised of just TWO Learning Outcomes – full details below.
LO1 – Prepare to carry out electrical maintenance
LO2 – Carry out electrical maintenance
Evidence Requirements
For Learning Outcome 1 & 2
Auditable evidence sourced from a real working environment must be provided to illustrate that you have demonstrated on two separate occasions, that you can carry out procedures, for the maintenance of electrical systems and equipment, in accordance with the assessment criteria.
In the delivery of this unit, an emphasis shall be made on the necessity to keep up to date with the latest standards, technologies and practices which relate to and affect the topics covered in this unit. This is then in keeping with good engineering practice.
You personally should be in as many photos/videos as possible.
Unit 110 – Apply Practices and Procedures for Maintenance
Introduction
On this page we walk you through everything you need to know to get started – and complete – Unit 110 of your 2346 EWA
What is Assessment Criteria?
This is the criteria you are being assessed against. In order to successfully complete the assessment, you must meet the criteria in EVERY unit.
How do I meet the Assessment Criteria of every unit?
You will simply provide evidence (photos) of HOW you carried out your duties.
This unit is about you working safely whilst carrying out your electrical installation or maintenance duties. You must provide evidence that you have carried out a risk assessment BEFORE you started work, review your working area DURING your working day, and tidied up upon completion of the job. You need to demonstrate that you have used access equipment safely and are dressed in the appropriate PPE.
See an overview of this unit’s assessment criteria and examples of evidence below.
You need to be in the Photos.
Learning Outcome 1
Prepare to carry out electrical maintenance
Assessment criteria
- Produce a maintenance work plan following best practice procedures to include:
- analysing the requirements of the task, (based on technical and engineering principles and know-how)
- planned shutdowns / isolations
- Health and Safety precautions (e.g. provision for release of stored and latent energy)
- permits to work
- organising tools, equipment and spare parts
- liaison with/co-ordination of work with other persons will be necessary
- time / cost-effectiveness
- a method statement (to include the appropriate best practice techniques / procedures / methods to undertake the maintenance activity).
- Use appropriate methods to communicate the plan/or key aspects of the planned work to relevant people such as other workers, colleagues and clients
- Perform maintenance duties effectively as part of a team (such as: with the employer, other workers etc)
- Assess and apply appropriate preparation procedures to include:
- adopting appropriate PPE
- obtaining authorisation to carry out the maintenance work (such as a permit to work)
- notifying relevant personnel of the maintenance work (other trades, users of equipment etc.)
- following risk assessments
- Select appropriate tools and equipment for the maintenance work:
- Hand tools/power tools:
– Access equipment
– Calibrated test instruments together with leads to GS 38 (as appropriate)
– Positioning / lifting / jacking equipment
– Trolleys / hand-operated jacks - following a safe system of work (e.g. working in accordance with a risk assessment and method statement)
- secure the work areas (fences, barriers, screens and warning signs)
- Hand tools/power tools:
- Ensure relevant shutdown procedures are followed and safe isolation has been carried out (e.g. electrical systems / pressurised systems (hydraulic / compressed air / water, gas))
- Assess and confirm secure storage facilities for tools, equipment, materials and components
- Confirm that all appropriate job information is available for use. Assess five from:
- Maintenance schedules / specifications
- Maintenance programmes
- Drawings / diagrams
- Regulatory documents (e.g. current version of BS 7671)
- Method statements
- Servicing records
- Manufacturer’s instructions
- Certificates of competency
- Permits to work
- Other relevant information
- Verify that proposed materials / equipment / components are in accordance with:
- industry requirements (best practice)
- the type of installation, its use, and the environment in which it is installed.
- Ensure permission for the proposed work has been given (e.g. from the client).
Photo evidence required
Learning Outcome 2
Carry out electrical maintenance
Assessment criteria
- Interpret the maintenance schedule/specification to accurately identify and locate electrical systems and equipment that is to be worked upon
- Use appropriate tools, equipment and materials for maintenance work
